YouTube’s new feature will help users and content creators to find and interact with each other by tagging their unique handles in comments, Shorts, video descriptions, and on channel pages.
YouTube has been introducing new and exciting features to its platform every now and then. The video-sharing site has announced through its News and Events page that it will launch another new feature that will allow users to use a unique identification method in the @username format.
YouTube says, “It’ll soon be simpler and faster to mention each other in comments, community posts, video descriptions and more.” YouTube further mentioned that creators could be tagged in titles of collab videos, mentioned in comments, so they reach out to new audiences and increase their visibility.
YouTube had restricted support for the @ format before this update. Creators could use the format to tag other channels in video titles. However, users could tag others only in Live chats or while replying to their comments.
In addition to allowing users to choose handles, YouTube will also generate URLs for users similar to their username, so they can share their handles on other social media channels and quickly direct people to their channel. If a user already has a personalised link, it will be set to the default URL for their channel. However, the user can channel the URL soon after a notification from YouTube.
Over this month, YouTube will officially roll out the handles. Users will be notified when they can choose their handles. According to YouTube, the time when a creator will get access to their username handle selection process will depend on various factors such as the subscriber count of the creators, whether their channel is active or not and their overall presence on YouTube.
Handles Will Become a Unique Identifier Following Channel Names
The new handles will distinguish the identity of users further. Channel names are not enough for a strong identity on YouTube unless a content creator has a considerable number of subscribers. However, YouTube has now made it easier for users to distinguish their identities further and make their channels noticeable. Apart from giving a unique identity to creators, these new handles will also provide a unique opportunity for users to create their distinctive brand on YouTube.
These handles, along with unique URLs, will not only create branding opportunities but also make it easy for creators to find new audiences and reach out to more viewers. Earlier this year, YouTube started allowing users to change their channel name as well as the URL. However, the handles that will be launched now have the edge over channel names in distinguishing channels.
All the @username handles will be unique, just like handles on other social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Creators can use this feature and create branding opportunities for themselves. The tagging feature will bring exposure and help creators to grow their channels.
